Day Five – 4/1/124
Bailey went out to the front yard today and in true Bailey form started barking and moving quickly to defend the property (there was no-one there but that is his usual form). I was able to keep up with him but he is ready to go once he is off his bed. He is still sleeping most of the day. We had a friend come over and he appropriately barked but did not get up .
I am going to try to reach the vet tomorrow to see when it is appropriate to let him walk without the sling and if his heavy panting when he gets up is normal.
I am still not sure how we are going to sleep in the future. Right now my daughter and I are sleeping on a blow up mattress next to him. His whole life he has slept next to me every night on the bed – I am just not sure how to break him in that he can’t do that anymore. Any suggestions?
I haven’t been through the entire tripawds website but am trying to figure out a bed for him. I have a fairly firm orthopedic bed which seems to work, however I am not sure if it is the best for him when getting up. Any thoughts?
I slept on an air mattress with Max for the first two weeks after his amputation. During part of that time, my husband constructed a ramp at the foot of our bed. When Max recovered from the surgery, he climbed right up that ramp and slept on the bed with us, just like he had done the previous seven years of his life. If you search the forums, you’ll find a photo of it. If Bailey is used to sleeping next to you, that doesn’t have to change! 🙂
Glad to hear he’s doing so well on his road to recovery!
Sounds like he is doing great! You don’t have to break him sleeping in the bed, just get some steps for him to climb to get into bed. Boomer is a 2 month post amp (rear left) and he puts his front paws on the bed and we give him a boost to finish the jump now.
Wishing you the best of recovery,
Tina and Boomer
barking in the yard – what a sweet sound!!! we found the tramadol made gayle pant, and once she was off of the pain meds, she was much happier. as for sleeping, gayle had a thick foam pad to sleep on, and i am not ashamed to say i slept next to her every night after her amputation – either on the floor, on the pull out sofa (when she could still jump up on it to sleep next to me) and finally on the sofa, with her bed right below.
you’ll figure it out, whatever you decide, it will be right for you.

Sounds like Bailey’s bed is fine. Please see all our recovery dog bed recommendations in the Gear blog.
